Woman Arrested For Public Intoxication
Cocke County deputies had their hands full taking a woman into custody. This happened early Thursday morning after a woman called 911 from the 440 Truck Stop hysterically screaming that someone was trying to kill her. Deputies arrived on scene and found a car pulled off of the eastbound I-40 ramp from exit 440. The driver of the car, Nikki Phillips of Moore, SC stated that she had traveled to Knoxville to pick up 53 year old Amy Sherrod, who had left a domestic violence situation. Phillips stated that Ms. Sherrod out of nowhere had become paranoid and began screaming and demanding that Phillips let her out of the vehicle on the interstate. Ms. Phillips stated that she did eventually stop around the 440 exit at which time Amy Sherrod exited the vehicle in the middle of the interstate and continued screaming. A deputy located Sherrod nearby, she was still screaming and stated that someone was trying to kill her and that she needed to get into the patrol car. Then she became uncomfortable in the car and wanted out to smoke a cigarette. Once out of the vehicle, Sherrod looked at the patrol car as if she was afraid of it and started saying she could not get into it. At that time, it was deemed by deputies that it would be in Amy Sherrod’s best interest to detain her. That is when she began to resist and it would eventually take four deputies to get her in the patrol car. She continued to fight inside the police car and also in the jail where she was finally placed in a restraint chair. Sherrod admitted at one point that she has used cocaine. She was charged with public intoxication and resisting arrest.
