Newport Police Seize Significant Amount Of Drugs
Newport Police seized a significant amount of drugs from a man who was found asleep at the wheel of a vehicle at an ATM. Police were called to First Horizon bank on Cosby Hwy Saturday morning…a car was just sitting at the ATM. Police found 27 year old sterling Hopper in a silver Ford Focus slumped over the steering wheel, with the car still running. Officer Lindsey Laughter reported smelling a strong odor of marijuana as she approached the car. When he came to, Hopper thought the officer was a bank teller. Upon searching the vehicle, officers located a a backpack containing 114 grams of marijuana and a total of 53 grams of a white crystal-like substance believed to be methamphetamine…which was packaged in separate plastic bags. Officers also located a digital scale and hypodermic needles inside the backpack. Hopper was arrested and charged with manufacture sale ort delivery of schedule II and VI narcotics along with a charge of DUI.
