Firefighters Concerned Winds Could Cause More Problems

Firefighters in the Cherokee National Forest are preparing for a big challenge this week. That is possible wind event today and tomorrow that could see wind gusts up to 60-70 mph could occur in the foothills and ridges of the mountains causing current fires to escape containment lines, as well as new fires being created from downed power lines and trees. Firefighters in the Cherokee National Forest have been working hard over the weekend to mop up, secure containment lines and maintain contingency lines on the Tweed, Rye Patch and Bullet Fires prior to this wind event expected wind event.

Fire officials are urging the public to obey the fire bans that are currently in effect in state, local and federal jurisdictions. New wildfire starts can burn rapidly and are difficult to control. If you see something, say something to law enforcement.

Containment on the Bullet fire in Monroe County and the Tweed Fire in Cocke and Greene Counties has increased to 40% and 85% respectively. That’s good news. Even though the increased winds may cause problems for firefighters, there is something heading this way in their favor…rain. Rain is expected to move in overnight tonight and continue throughout the day on Tuesday and could continue into Wednesday.
