Cocke County SRO’s At Safety Summit
Cocke County and Newport School Resource Officers are attending a training seminar this week in Gatlinburg. The annual SRO school safety summit is being held at the Gatlinburg Conference Center. The training began yesterday and ends today. Among the speakers at this years’ summit are Missy Dodds who is a former math teacher and survived the Red Lake High School Shooting in Red Lake, MN back in March of 2005. In that shooting a 16 year old former student killed seven people and wounded five others. Also speaking at the summit this year is Frank DeAngelis, who was the principal at Columbine High School during the 1999 active shooting incident in Colorado. Along with the school resource officers, who are receiving valuable information at the summit are also Cocke County Sheriff C.J. Ball, Newport Police Chief Maurice Shults, Deputy Chief Scott Lamb, Chief of the Cocke County Fire Department Bryan Southerland, city fire Chief Jeremy Shelton, Cocke County Emergency Management Director Joe Esway, and Assistant Director of Schools Casey Kelly.
