Update On Ian For East Tennessee

Hurricane Ian made landfall on the west coast of Florida around Ft. Myers Wednesday afternoon. Ian hit as a stong category 4 storm with winds of 155 mph…gusts up to 200 mph.

We will start feeling the affects of Ian later today as winds will begin to pick up. As far as rain goes…the storm track has changed just a little. The center of circulation is now expected to go to our east a little…looks like it will go right over Johnson City. So areas to our northeast will see heavier rainfall.

We are expecting rain to begin by late Friday afternoon or early Friday evening. We could see some heavier bands of rainfall come through during the overnight hours Friday night into Saturday morning. We could see some breaks in the rainfall during the day on Saturday, but a second wave of showers will come through Saturday night and Sunday. It will be early Monday before the system lifts out of our area. Total rainfall totals of 2″ to 3″ in some areas close to the mountains are possible over the weekend. The North Carolina mountains to out east could see heavier rainfall.
